With the Edible Forest’s nutritionally rich soil the plants’ growth and supply of fruits, seeds and leaves is vast and increasing each year. We began pickling and preserving to ensure supply throughout the year. The garden was producing so much that the Edible Forest needed its very own preserving kitchen!
Preserving Kitchen
A preserving kitchen was decided to be incorporated into the Edible Forest. To keep in line with our sustainability philosophy, two shipping containers were re-purposed and 2nd hand kitchen equipment was acquired in Sept 2017.
With a purpose, our new container kitchen became known as the ‘Harvest Hub’, the perfect classroom kitchen for corporate guests looking for a unique teambuilding activity whilst onsite.
Cooking Classes
Cooking classes were designed with our corporate guests often electing to donate the meals they had created to local homeless organisations; giving back to the community and joining YVE in our philosophy of benefiting others within the community. Due to their popularity these classes are now offered to the community allowing them the opportunity to also learn and engage with the Edible Forest.
The HARVEST HUB today is a little space where you can find shelves filled with jams, relishes and marinated goods; all made from items harvested from the Edible Forest. Visitors are welcome to purchase items to take home and enjoy or gift to someone special. The Hub also offers inspirational sustainability living and healthy eating cookbooks, sustainable items and delicious room sprays & soy travel candles. The HARVEST HUB is also where our creative cooking and craft classes take place. Visit our classes page for more information and time tables for our current cooking and sustainable craft classes and school holiday programs.
